Active Earth

This course uses a team-building approach to introduce and explore social and environmental responsibility.

The course is designed for groups of up to forty people, working in teams of eight. Through a series of activities, participants will be led to real and

practical outcomes that have a tangible impact on your business.

Experiential training in beautiful, wild places creates space for fresh ways of thinking. Nature presents us with a different perspective while adventure demands a deeper level of awareness. Our experienced facilitators guide participants through this environment and earn the trust and respect of the group. Their mentoring creates a constructive atmosphere for dialogue, debate, reflection and creative problem solving. This is complemented by theory sessions that blend natural sciences, psychology, philosophy and contemporary business issues.

Participants take positive experiences and fresh ideas back into the workplace. They utilise new interpersonal communication skills and techniques to work more effectively. The course gives enhanced meaning to employees’ work, leading to improved performance, greater team cohesion, and a higher rate of staff retention.

The basic two-day team-building module can be extended into a more comprehensive three or four day program. The extra time allows for transferring learning back to the participant’s professional context, which enhances the immediate benefits.

Day one is about slowing down and opening up to the other people in the group and to nature. We explore the idea of ‘Meeting Needs’: What are our needs, and what are the

psychological forces driving these needs?

A set of interpersonal techniques will help us communicate in a clear and open way. The activities are designed to help participants become more aware of their actions and emotions. Heightened awareness also facilitates attention towards others, a basic requirement for team-building and productive relationships.

The second day picks up on this note by exploring the theme of ‘Interconnection’. In a series of activities, participants will explore contemporary ideas about perception

and realise how embedded concepts of thought and prejudices can distort perception and reasoning. Discovering such thought patterns helps understand one’s reactions and fears when faced with new developments and challenges, leading to more informed, unbiased decisions.

The third day, with the theme of ‘Self as Ecology’, is reserved for personal reflection and group communication. A morning wilderness ‘solo’ takes participants out into nature allowing

them to revitalise their relationship with the natural environment by simply enjoying its beauty. The afternoon allows time for practising an advanced group communication technique that facilitates exchange on highly emotional or controversial topics.

Day four concludes the course under the theme ‘Making Meaning’. It provides an opportunity for drawing lessons, learning from previous days, and transferring insights gained into the corporate context. Specific communication techniques for open dialogue and stakeholder integration

will help draw the course together and allow participants to develop ideas for follow-up.
