Active Earth

Our Leading CSR course provides training for those in a strategic leadership role who wish to engage others in Corporate Social Responsibility.

The five-day course focuses on leading change and provides participants with powerful tools that help to motivate and engage others.

By combining outdoor-based activities with creative dialogue in inspirational natural environments, we ensure a deeply effective and meaningful learning experience.

Theory sessions provide the intellectual framework, drawing from contemporary models of social and cultural change processes, ethics, leadership, ecology and relational psychology.

Each course is designed for up to eight participants. Strategic consultancy and workplace-based mentoring can be added to create a comprehensive cultural development project.

Content
The course is based at one of ActiveEarth's wild and beautiful locations such as Scotland, the Spanish Pyrenees or, in winter, in the French Alps. Participants will spend inspirational time in the surrounding forests and mountains, combined with

theory sessions either in the comfort of a Hotel, our ‘tipi camp’ or a rustic mountain lodge.

Day one is about slowing down and getting into the natural pace of the area. The first theory session will explore the idea of ‘Meeting Needs’: What are our needs, and what are the psychological concepts behind these needs? A set of interpersonal techniques will help us communicate in a clear and open way. The day will help participants to become more aware about the power of their actions and emotions as the first step towards successful moderation of corporate change.

The second day is centred around the theme ‘Social and Cultural Change’ and gives an opportunity to explore some contemporary concepts about how change occurs.

Drawing from real-life examples, we gain an extraordinary insight into how groups of humans have changed themselves and led change in others. We connect these concepts back to the corporate context and explore solutions linked to the business sector.

The third day, with the theme of ‘Self as Ecology’, is reserved for personal reflection and group communication. A morning wilderness ‘solo’ takes participants out into nature and allows them to reconnect and revitalise. The afternoon is reserved for practising and leading an advanced group communication technique that facilitates exchange on highly emotional or controversial topics.

Day four is about ‘Leadership’. By exploring the ideas of General Systems Theory and human ecology, fundamentally important leadership issues and techniques are uncovered.

We also look into power dynamics, and how to move from classical ‘control and command’ models of leadership to more reflexive and dialogue-based approaches. Finally, we analyse different leadership styles that provide us with effective ways of shaping change.

The fifth day closes the course on the theme ‘Making Meaning’. This session provides an opportunity for integrating gained insights into an often challenging business context.

Specific communication techniques for open communication and stakeholder integration will help draw the course together and allow us to develop ideas for follow-up.
